Sadly, I saw it only from a distance as we went through the town of Port Stanley while on a bus tour. Even so we were lucky just to be able to get off our ship for a few hours on shore. A port call in the Falklands is on several cruise tour itineraries, but apparently the ships are only able to make it 50% of the time owing to the frequency of strong winds and high seas in the South Atlantic -- and that's during summer in the Southern Hemisphere. There was more tourist guide chatter about the Argentine Falklands War, understandably, as it was more recent and many of the local folks had lived through it.
Excellent work!
The whole series of incidents is gripping reading in Churchill's memoirs, The World Crisis.
Indeed it is.
A very interesting account, Thomas, thank you for this post. I only wish you had posted a couple of months earlier prior to my visit to Port Stanley.
Did you happen to see the memorial?
