Troubridge was treated gently as Admiral Byng could attest.

Indeed. But the Admiralty had, after all, given that limiting instruction. And to be fair, Toubridge did give good service later in the war. No, I think he may be judged mercifully on the whole. Not every British flag officer could have been expected to be a Nelson.
