I do think that Putin might not have invaded if Trump were president because Trump is unpredictable. Adds an extant cost. Putin was virtually guaranteed that Biden would do nothing. With Trump it was a gamble.
“The natcon isolationists who wield such influence in the second Trump Administration argue that the fate of countries far away, inhabited by people of whom we know little, is a matter of indifference to America.”
I do wonder how much influence the young ignorant dogmatic cohort has on an aging Trump.
How much influence? A lot, it appears. No, let’s put it in Trump-talk: “A LOT! THE MOST AND BEST INFLUENCE OF ALL TIME!”
Sarcasm aside, Trump relies upon his sons, specifically Don Jr., for advice — probably because Trump Sr. has little knowledge of foreign policy and even less internal ideology. And who is one of Jr.’s best friends? Tucker Carlson, it turns out. Recall that Carlson was sitting next to the bros in the same row as Trump himself at the GOP convention last year.
Combine that malign voice with The Donald’s narcissism and you have a toxic stew of ignorance and disaster.
I supported Trump in much of what he is doing (and still do), but Ukraine is a huge failure.
Time for Trump to pivot (he can call the pivot anything he wants), but his efforts have failed.
The survival of Ukraine is going to be the litmus test of the west.
Still time (but getting very short) for Trump to redeem himself.

It’s possible, though in my opinion doubtful. These days, certainly, Putin isn’t acting as if he thinks Trump is unpredictable. Rather the reverse.

Trump’s first term had John Bolton. Hard to imagine at this point.
Not so excellent Ukranian adventure 😂
