So neither side is in a position to impose their will. And politically it’s too late for a major escalation in aid--or at least a big enough escalation to change the basic dynamic you describe. So just like in Iraq and Afghanistan, bad politics based on ignorance and wishful thinking have generated a bad war.

Excellent analysis. This is the Biden-Blinken philosophy of foreign policy. Just give enough time and we can settle this in the board room. Don't let our allies win for fear of "escalation". Ignore the larger consequences of not supporting our allies. True in Ukraine. True in the mideast (and not only with Israel). They are at one with the "cease fire now at any cost" crowd.

The Republicans in the House of Representatives also need to find the courage to defy Trump and the MAGA wing of their party and pass an aid package for Ukraine.

Yes, but Trump himself hasn’t come out against aid to Ukraine. He actually hasn’t said much about the war at all. And the natcon opposition to US involvement in the war, though it overlaps with MAGA, isn’t synonymous with MAGA.

"the natcon opposition to US involvement in the war, though it overlaps with MAGA, isn’t synonymous with MAGA." I'd like to see that Venn diagram.

I hear so many people focusing on what Trump MIGHT do IF he became president.

We need to focus on the actions of the current president.

If we let Ukraine fall (however that is defined), a lot of countries will question our commitment (more than they already do).

But Ukraine isn't alone.

Lots of countries watching to see if we will back the Philippines in their defense of the outpost at Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratley Islands.

Come on Joe. We only need one or two victories.

It’s interesting to note that Trump hasn’t really taken up the natcon/neo-isolationist line on Ukraine. Indeed, he hasn’t had much to say about the Russo-Ukrainian War. Now that it’s obvious that Biden’s Ukraine policy is a pig’s breakfast of fearfulness and muddled thinking, Trump may even come out as a war hawk, denouncing Joe the Appeaser. Where the Prince of the Golden Escalator is concerned, anything’s possible.

Very true - one never knows where Trump will take you. You can only be sure that it will be "controversial". If Trump comes our foursquare for Ukraine - will that force Biden to abandon them totally?
