It's more recent, potentiated by social media, just as the wave of violence on the 1960s and 70s was stimulated by the rise of television and the political violence of the late 19th century was enabled by the telegraph and penny press.

Our current wave started around 2013 or so, visible through BLM, the harassment of Jewish students on campus, and campus cancel culture. The far right became a thing in 2017, like in Charlottesville. The constant drum beat of race in the media, pushed by the Obama White House and the New York Times starting in 2010, definitely played a role.

On the right it goes back at least to the 1984 murder of Alan Berg, and on the left it dates back at least to the 1999 Seattle OTC protests. Either way, political violence must be condemned and prosecuted.

👏👏👏 Well said, Mr. Gregg well said! Political violence from the left or right, is unacceptable! If liberals and leftists try to blame it on Trump, MAGA or the Republicans it will show once again how they don’t care about facts only about partisan politics and ideology. It appears to me like from what the commenter below said, Vance Boelter was a disgruntled office seeker. The tragic assassination of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her beloved husband and the attempt on State Rep. John Hoffman and his wife are symptoms of a greater problem.

Political violence has become acceptable to sizeable minority of both Democrats and Republicans. The left denounces and despises the violence of the right as they should. But then they say since their the “morally righteous side” their violence is okay because their fighting white supremacy and fascism or whatever. Luigi Mangione is not a hero. I don’t care if United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was as bad of a guy as they say. It doesn’t justify what he did nor did it do anything to fix the American healthcare system.

Mangione is a murderous thug and a John Wilkes Booth type figure who did what he did for his own personal glory. As to the populist and radical left and right’s reactions to Israel saving the world by bombing and damaging Iran’s nuclear facilities, it’s no surprise. Tucker Carlson, Darryl Cooper and Candace Owens are all idiots who don’t have a clue what their talking about. Cooper is NOT a real historian and you should listen to nothing he says. All three are antisemites whether they would admit it or not.

RIP Melissa Hortman and her husband! May both their memories be a blessing! 🇺🇸🫡❤️🌸🌺💐🕊️🕯️

I remain baffled by both the left's intellectual blindness and its venom.

Talking with my lefty friends is an exercise in futility.

More, it is disappointing.

Most of my lefty friends are intelligent people, but their hatred of Trump seems to short circuit their brains.

Worse, it seems to have stifled their normally decent instincts.

Different subject.

The army parade was great.

I felt pride and I thought that the soldiers had a great time.

The left saw it as a fascist display.

I hope that Americans enjoyed it as much as I did.

Speaking of the Army's 250th 'birthday celebration' Steve sez, "The left saw it as a fascist display."

That is a sweeping generalization which, according to my reading, is incorrect. What I think you mean to say is, "I think that people on the Left must have hated it and called it 'Fascist.'"

Since I read a lot of newsletters whose authors are critics of Trump and his administration, I also see a lot of negative comments from ordinary folks. I'd say most of them are "Left"or "Lean Left". Many commenters online criticized the parade as an unnecessary expense, undertaken to feed Trump's ego. Many said it was the sort of extravagant display of military power that autocrats employ to intimidate their adversaries -- Kim Jon Un was mentioned many times -- but I do not recall seeing one comment that called the parade, the troops or the displays 'fascist'.

Maybe you can find such a comment if you look hard enough (there are nut jobs on the fringe of every part of the political spectrum) but I did not see or read any comment suggesting that the parade itself was a fascist display. And several who were at the mall said how much they liked & learned from the static displays of Army history.

There was a lot of negative comment about Trump. He is the focus, not the military.

I agree with your post except for "What motivated the Minnesota assassin remains unclear—though he’s said to be a Trump supporter. " The suspected assassin's wife has a past connection to Minnesota politics. Records show she interned for Gov. Tim Walz back in 2010 and Vance Luther Boelter himself has long-standing ties to state leadership. He was appointed to the Governor’s Workforce Development Board in 2019 by Gov. Walz. I believe whoever told you he's a Trump supporter got it wrong.

Excellent article except for that. Thank you for the great work!
