Now that the border crisis has become a hot-button political issue, our friends on the Left have come out of the closet. The comrades are border hawks! Who knew?
Poor old Joe Biden sits in the Oval Office, wringing his hands over the flood of illegal immigrants into America’s hard-pressed America’s sanctuary cities. But what can he do? The President wants to get the situation under control, but those neofascist mega-mooga-MAGA Republicans in the House of Representatives refuse to help him out. If only they’d quit playing politics and pass legislation, the President could do something. But they won’t, so he can’t. Anyhow, the whole thing is Trump’s fault. So goes the narrative.
The bare-faced audacity with which Biden, his minions, and his apologists are barfing out these lies shows yet again that Democrats and progressives have nothing but contempt for the American people. Yet again, “our democracy” becomes inoperable when the will of the people conflicts with the desires of the Left. We, the people, want the mess on the southern border cleaned up. They, the Left, want the border abolished. And by refusing to enforce existing federal immigration law, by refusing to do his constitutional duty, Biden has been giving the Left what it wants. Only now, in an election year, with the public giving him lousy marks on border security, has the President changed his tune.
The legislation that Biden says he so desperately needs to fix things is a bipartisan Senate bill the details of which remain shrouded in secrecy. One thing can be taken for granted, however: No bill of which Democratic senators approve will solve the problem. The political party that reviled Border Patrol agents as whip-wielding racist goons on horseback, viciously lashing saintly “migrants,” is not to be trusted on this issue. One leaked detail about the Senate bill says it all: It would give the president authority to close the border if there’s an average of more than 5,000 illegal crossings per day over a seven-day period. That’s around 35,000 illegals per month—the progressive version of a secure border.
As for the claim that Biden inherited a broken border, that’s a flat-out lie. Assuming office in January 2021, he reversed multiple Trump policies: Remain in Mexico, asylum agreements with Central American governments, construction of physical barriers, etc. That and his blather about being more “humane” and caring than the Ogre Trump sent a clear message to the world: Come on in! And so they have, to the number of some six million to date. And for nearly three years, Biden just sat back and let it happen. He never lifted a finger. He never made use of the authority already given him by the Immigration and Nationalization Act: “Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he deems necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants.”
Instead of making use of his existing authority, Biden dragooned a reluctant Kamala Harris into service as the nation’s “border czar”—a bad joke at the nation’s expense. Instead, Biden sent out his laughably incompetent Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, to assure Congress and the American people that everything down there in Texas and Arizona was under control. In the background of those assurances could be seen hordes of illegals, marching toward and across the US/Mexico border. Instead, Biden joined the slanderous chorus that was defaming the Border Patrol with charges of brutality, racism, and fascism.
Given his atrocious record on the issue, there’s no reason to take the President’s about-face on the border seriously. No doubt he wants legislation passed for appearances only: He and the Democrats could then claim that they’re doing something, while the illegals continue to flood in. And if this weren’t an election year, they wouldn’t bestir themselves to do even that much. The Democratic Party is the party of open borders.
House Republicans should ignore all the screaming from the Left, all the whining from the Oval Office, and decline to help Joe Biden touch up his resume with fake credentials as a border hawk. Border buster is more like it.
The Dems are about to (re) discover Mencken's axiom ("...good and hard.").
Dem voters gloried in virtue signalling - sanctuary cities and financial support for illegals.
It was fun and easy when TX/AZ bore the brunt of the pain.
But the chickens are coming home to roost.
Financial costs, fewer scarce resources, and plain inconvenience is showing Dem voters that votes have consequences.
Open borders are no longer a cost free way to demonstrate superiority.
And the liberal politicians dimly perceive danger. They hope that they can get past 11/24 without paying a significant price. Don't know.
But a significant number of centrist voters are awakening to the realities of open borders.
And a significant number of conservative voters see the border as a hill worth standing for.
Trump had a republican senate and Congress and absolutely failed to do anything regarding the border the first time. Let's be honest: no politician cares about the border. Probably because they know it's a losing issue. Immigration is the new abortion.
