Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council passed a pro-Hamas, anti-Israel resolution demanding “an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire.” Or to put it in plain language, Israel should lay down its arms instead of finishing off the genocidal death cult that carried out the bloody October 7, 2023, pogrom. Hamas should be allowed to survive, no doubt to perpetrate further atrocities. Absent from the resolution was any mention of Hamas’ responsibility for starting the present war. Also absent was any mention of the hostages being held by Hamas—several of whom are American citizens.
When the votes were tallied, the United States abstained. For America and for Joe Biden personally, March 25, 2024, was a day of shame.
There’s no better evidence of the Biden Administration’s incompetence, two-facedness, and moral squalor than the sorry chronicle of its foreign policy. Just ask the suffering people of Afghanistan, subject once more to the tyranny of the Taliban courtesy of our despicable president. Ask the people of Ukraine, who were denied the help they needed to drive the Russian invader out of their country. And now ask the people of Israel, who see that their fate is far less important to Biden and his minions than a few thousand jihadist votes in Michigan and Minnesota.
The President’s pusillanimity will backfire on him, of course. The Hamas-hugging antisemite activists who follow him around, denouncing him as a war criminal and agent of genocide, will reward him for betraying Israel with more of the same. The antisemitic progressive wing of the Democratic Party will do likewise. American Jews will take a long, hard look at him and the Democratic Party. And Israel, which was founded on the principle that the Jews can rely on only themselves, saw that principle confirmed yesterday.
Already the Israeli government has cancelled the meeting between its representatives and American officials to discuss strategy for the final phase of the war in Gaza. Gone is any influence that the US might have exercised over Israeli policy. Gone is the possibility, faint though it may have been, of a general peace settlement and an independent Palestinian state. Now, Israel will do what it must to reestablish security and deterrence, regardless of what Biden & Co. may say.
Democrats and progressive denounce Donald Trump for his threats to abandon America’s allies in the name of America First. As a standalone criticism, this is more than fair; I agree entirely. But Democrats and progressives have some nerve voicing it after Biden’s betrayal of Afghanistan, Ukraine, Israel. Why should America’s other allies place their faith in this country’s word when it’s clear that under this president, America’s word is conditioned on domestic political priorities? How, for example, can our NATO allies be confident that if V. Putin goes after Poland or the Baltic States, America would honor its treaty obligations? They’ve certainly been given reasons to think otherwise.
I take some comfort in the fact that not every Democrat stands with Joe Biden and his policy of cowardly appeasement. Pennsylvania’s junior senator, John Fetterman, had this to say after the passage of yesterday’s infamous Security Council resolution: “It’s appalling the U.S. allowed passage of a resolution that fails to condemn Hamas. The UN has always been unwilling to condemn this group of terrorists, cowards and rapists. We must stand with Israel and stop pandering to the political fringe or Hamas apologists.”
Good for you, Senator.
I’ve been arguing recently that for America, credibility is indivisible: The betrayal of one ally undermines the faith that other allies place in this country’s word, while encouraging bad actors like V. Putin. There’s not much doubt that Biden’s Afghanistan skedaddle played a part in the Russian despot’s decision to invade Ukraine. Now the President has done it again, with a public and shameful betrayal of the Jewish state that will be remembered in history as a stain on this country’s honor.
Correction: contrary to what is stated in the first paragraph of this article, the Security Council resolution did mention the hostages, demanding their release. I regret the error.
Pulling out of Afghanistan was the only moment of Biden presidency I've been proud of. Twenty years in that pointless and unwinnable war. How many more did you want? It was always going to be ugly, the threat of that is how they blackmailed presidents for two decades.
The sensible foreign policy is to only take on obligations you can credibly keep. Forever wars in Central Asia is not a promise we can keep.
The US is under no obligation to support Israel, but I wouldn't get in its way either. They are the clear moral superior in this conflict. It's obvious that Biden wants some votes in Michigan because Dems were dumb enough to import Arabs (same problem in Europe).
I’ve heard it said that the world views American as a weak enemy and a treacherous ally, this is all the proof you need
